Book Review

Emily has been a Harry Potter fan since the books first came out. Anyone wonder why one of our cats is named Harry? Perhaps because as a kitten, Harry got into as much trouble as his namesake.

Anyway, I like the new book. We didn't notice as many editing mistakes as the last one. Fewer misspelled words, fewer mistakes that didn't jive with the other books, fewer screw-ups. I thought Rowling's writing has improved; this installment didn't feel as forced as the previous. This book flowed, with everything having a purpose, rather than the "filler" feel of the previous book. Middle chapters in that book left the reader wondering why they were there, even after reading the entire book.

I won't give away the ending, for those readers still slogging along. (I know 700+ pages may seem like a lot. Just to make you all feel inadequate, Emily and I both had read our one copy by 3pm on Sunday, after getting the book in the mail at 11am on Saturday.) However, I applaud Rowling on the ending of this book. The feeling is similar to the end of Empire Strikes Back after the first time you see that movie. Other nerds here will understand what I mean.

Anyway, I'm off to pack for Indianapolis. This is just a post to kick-start a book discussion.

how many Harry Potter books are there going to be

Per Rowling's reports initially, there are only going to be 7 books, one for each year at Hogwarts.

There has been much speculation as to whether Harry will survive the last book.

BTW, Jay the book may have arrived at 11am, but I didn't open the box until 4:30pm on Saturday. I think we read the last book quicker though.

What What!

I would like to say that Jay is one of the best read people that I know. He is also one of the fastest readers I know. He puts me to shame constantly. (This is meant in all seriousness.)

It was fun, but extremly chaotic and sweaty.

P.S. I want to row

Oh, Emily, I know. Jay, and you for that matter, is one of the most intelligent people that I've ever met!

AAAAAHHHH! I just finished the book this morning after getting it last night and it is so good! I totally agree with you, Jay, about the book feeling like "The Empire Strikes Back."

I think Harry will die in the next/last book. But, the story is told in the third person limited, right? So if Harry dies, then the story would just stop there, wouldn't it? Confusing.

Man that was a good book!

It is limited first person but thinking back to the first book and even in the beginning of book six, there have been times when the narrator has acted as an omniscient narrator. Harry could die, but it would have to be a smooth transition.

The only part that sucks about killing him (other than the fact that kids love his character) is the fact that it would limit Rowlings from picking up the series again if she changed her mind in 5 years.

Well perhaps, like most authors, she will start something new after this series is finished. Its almost unimaginable that she could make her entire living off of this one concept. I do believe she is quite set in the financial department, but perhaps a new series, or just single novels could follow this series and we can see what kind of writing prowess she has outside of Hogwarts.

i completely agree with you on this one it seemed to flow so well, the story took me no time at all, 652 pages seemed very daunting at first but it flew by i will be sad to read the last of the series next book though i cannot wait to see the movies
