Beautiful weather in Atlanta. Not too bad up here. Perhaps Pittsburgh's winter won't be so bad, or have I just cursed everyone? Level high these days but temp almost up to 40.
Got a great post coming from New Year's Eve. I'm just waiting for Emily's father to send the pictures. I'm sure that will get everyone really interested.
Along with my survival suit (which I don't look like a marshmellow in), I also got an iPod for Christmas. I have no plans to bring it out on the water. Our river seems to eat such things.
During the winter, baseball has the "hot stove league" where teams build interest through free-agent signings and some fan bases begin to think "this is our year." Rowing has something similar; because the teams are indoors and coaches don't have as much to do, we spend our time in meetings pissing each other off. I won't get into details (this comment has NOTHING to do with either team I'm involved with), but suffice it to say that coaches get a little itchy these months.
Why do three year olds never want to go to sleep? I love sleep and never get enough.
We brought up two huge bookcases from Atlanta. Unfortunately, we've already got more books laying around than there is space in these bookcases.
Going to have a meeting this weekend with the other Pitt coaches to map out the months ahead. Don't worry, Pitt guys. It will be painful, but fun.
Watching the game tonight, I wasn't impressed with Reggie Bush or Matt Leinart. LenDale White seemed the more polished, patient runner. Leinart's passes were never quite on target nor did they have the velocity needed for the tight coverages he faced. Here's my prediction: Bush will go 1st pick, and pull a Ki-Jana Carter on the Texans. Leinart won't be an NFL starter. Really going out on a limb here, aren't I?

I must comment on Matt Leinart's post-game field interview.
Does USC train it's quarterbacks to be whiny bitches?
"They made the plays but I still think we are the better team"
-Matt Leinart
"They played better than we did, but I still think we are the better team."
-Carson Palmer (after the first loss to the Steelers.)
...Just asking.
Anyway, I WAS impressed with Matt Leinart's performance in the game. Matt Leinart is very comfortable in the pocket, and uses his time in there. Even when he is flushed out, he can still make a play with the ball. Matt Leinart has the skills he needs to be an NFL quarterback. He stays in the pocket, and makes smart plays.
Yes, I was rooting for the Longhorns. All along.
Vince Young impressed me with his talent reading the defense. He made his smart plays, whether passing or running. He was reading USC's zone defense as if it were a children's book. (well, it has been since Troy Polamalu left). If Vince Young were to enter the draft this year, I believe the No Home Saints would be the best fitting team to draft him. The Saints have worked with Aaron Brooks for the past few years, and I see some similarities between Brooks and Young. Except for the suck. Like Brooks, Young has the speed to get out of the pocket and make plays with his legs (probably more comparable to Michael Vick in this aspect). Unlike Brooks, Young can stand in the pocket, read the defense, and then make the smart throw. Vince Young was the most impressive player in the Rose Bowl this year.
I have to give some serious props to the Texas D and special teams. They stopped Bush, White, Leinart, Smith, Jarrett, and every other hoop-lah'd USC offensive sleezeball.
Haha. That has a double meaning.
"Things that start here change the world. We're Texas."
Go Horns.
Jay did you mention baseball?
Pirates=2006 NL Central Champs!!!
I've heard ipods sink...
Drew, they've made some big free agent signings and the WILL be good this year. they finally have pitching an hitting and enough money to hold onto their good players.
uh, kleiner...in 2014 i will be 26, and I hope the pirates win something before then!
oh, and jay will be almost 40!
By the stats and outcome of the game, Vince Young certainly was the most outstanding player.
The Texas D was far more impressive than Reggie Bush. Bush ran for a weak 82 yards (but had 95 receiving). Reggie's longest play was a 37 yard catch, which occurred on the next to last play of the game.
Some difference maker he is...
And if no one else knew, Vince Young has the highest QB passing effiency rating of any college quarterback... what do you mean he can't pass?
What do you mean he can't win a game on his arm alone? Here are the stats from the game vs. Colorado this year:
Rushing: 10car, 58yds, 3TDs.
Passing: 25/29(86.2%), 336yds, 2TDs.
(yes, 3 rushing TDs but his longest run was 16 yards. Even Big Ben can run that far. Tommy Maddox even. Without fumbling of course.)
and vs. Kansas:
Rushing Yards: -4
Rushing TDs: 0
Passing: 19/27, 281yds, 70.4%, 4TDs.
If that Kansas game isn't using your arm alone, I don't know what is. The Colorado game is certainly an impressive showing. 86.2% is unheard of, even for Peyton and Tom.
Steve Kanas and Colorado suck your fact dosen't mean anything except proving that they really suck
Jay, you and I both know that the Texans' organization isn't smart enough to actually use their first overall pick. They're probably going to trade down to 8 or 9 and takeing my man Brickashaw Ferguson. I'm not saying they couldn't use one, but I'd say that skill positions are just as much of a problem. Who knows? They could trade their pick to the Packers who would take Bush (because let's face it, a 3rd string runningback at Gerry Falwell U isn't going to be a consistent starter and certainly not one to give their quarterback, be it Favre or Rogers, someone to swing it out of the backfield to). That's what I love about the NFL Draft... You never know...
don't know why that extra -ing was in there
If the Texans were smart, they would trade the first pick for 3 offensive linemen for a handful of draftpicks, all to be spent on offensive linemen.
They don't need Reggie Bush. They have enough fast, playmaking backs to get the job done. All they need is the line to block for them.
I meant:

They don't need Reggie Bush. They have enough fast, playmaking backs to get the job done (Davis, Morency). All they need is a line to block for them. Hell David Carr might end up a pro bowl quarterback some day...
The reason that Vince Young's passing numbers are so good is because he can move around and make time for his recievers to get open. He wont get that extra time in the pros. Mark my words, Marcus Vick will be a better pro quarterback than Vince Young, but they're both gonna be quality quarterbacks, like Dante-C and Steve McNair, not bad ones, like Michael Vick and Aaron Brooks...
