I've got the citation somewhere in my USRowing level III book. I don't feel like digging that out because I'm a little short of sleep. Anyway, here's today's fact for digestion:
80% of the energy expended in a rowing race is through the aerobic energy system. In "english," this means the most important training for rowing is long endurance training. "Aerobic" means using oxygen, a system that does not produce lactic acid which causes pain throughout the body.
Aerobic fitness is the most important aspect of rowing training. Short intervals may be fun (and painful) and weights may be great for the ego as the athlete slams around large amounts of lead. These are important, as power and pain tolarance are aspects for a race. But the aeorbic training will pay the biggest dividends in fitness, boat speed and won races.
Long, boring, ass-numbing, mind-numbing, sore-back-causing, sweaty, tiresome steady state training. That is why the swim teams do hundred lap days, cyclists log hundreds of miles and runners keep Nike in business.
Want speed? Get in the miles. There is no faking fitness.

Hour piece or 6 x 500? Easy choice.
@#%$ for some reason I can never get the verification word right the first time! Argh!

Ummmm... hour pieces?
What I would give for those, man. Maybe my heels wouldn't bleed through every pair of socks I own. I am convinced that during a few of my 30K's I actually became hypotensive because of the blood loss...
Steve r., it sounds like you need new shoes pretty badly man. It shouldn't matter how long you're ergging if you bleed as much as it sounds like you do.
hey foxbat, my birthday is coming up, you know...
