Music in Rowing

Perhaps its because rhythm is so important in the sport. Perhaps because rowers constantly search for a piece of music that inspires them and fits perfectly in time on the catches of an erg piece. Perhaps that internal "mental soundtrack" that many of us have needs something dramatic whenever sport is involved.

I've only heard of one coach that frowned upon music during practice, and I had to row for him. Todd Jesdale refused to let us listen to anything during practice. 6x500m, 20min erg tests or 60min A1 hours, the only thing we had to listen to was the roaring of our model B ergs. (Yes, I am that old.) My only act of defiance was brining in a diskman (yes, those were invented) during my 6am extra work I did the winter of my senior year. That's just too early in the morning not to listen to something, especially when I was working out alone. (One particularly depressing morning found me the only person in the place, as it was in the middle of a 7" snowstorm. School was cancelled, but I got in my two practices. What a freak...)

Anyway, what's my point of this post? I'm not sure, like many before this.

The guys did give me a disk of their favorite erging music today. I have to admit that there's finally some rap music that I like to hear. Perhaps because I associate it with watching the boys slaving away on the machines.

I like short, easy to read, not hard to comprehend, and meaningful posts. Keep up the good work.

ROLL TIDE!!!!

For the guys that did not notice. The base beat of "Roll Tide" is at approx 30spm. Good erging music, right rythm and extremely dramatic anthem.

I can tell how tired you were when you wrote this!

You know, there are certain songs I heard now, all of them rap... that I associated with the few practices that I have attended. Somehow when I hear them without the whirlling of the ergs in the background, something is missing.

At least you don't go nuts whenever you hear "mortal kombat". Ok, back to bed now. Sorry I'm not there, guys.

Aaron, is it a soundrack of your life?

Just thought you would want to know that Will highly approves of the CD. He was dancing in the car to it last night, and asked where it was this morning. I believed that his daddy swiped it on the way to his AM practice.

Music in the boat will return. I was hoping to put some in these few days, but we haven't been in any 8s. The 4s deserve more concentration, though I might make an exception here or there.
